Toronto/GTA soil holds water – a shallow base is the top cause of driveway heave. We build to a compacted Granular A/B base designed for repeated freeze-thaw cycling.
Repaving or widening a driveway that touches the boulevard requires a City street work permit – we handle the application and the required lead time.
The crew that measures your site is the crew that builds it.
Interlock Experts Toronto builds every driveway on a base engineered for this city's specific ground conditions, not a generic install. Much of the Toronto and GTA area sits on clay-heavy soil that holds water, and combined with the repeated freeze-thaw cycling this region gets through the transitional months, that's exactly what causes paver heaving, settling, and shifting when a shallow gravel base is used instead. A standard four-inch base is the single most common reason a driveway that looked fine in year one is uneven by year three. We build to a properly compacted Granular B sub-base plus a Granular A base course – it costs more up front and it's the entire reason a driveway installed today should still look straight a decade from now.
Constructing, widening, relocating, or even just repaving an existing driveway that touches the public boulevard requires a City of Toronto street work permit under Municipal Code Chapter 743. Applications need scaled drawings and should go in at least eight weeks before work starts, and the paving contractor has to hold a City driveway-paving business licence. We handle the application as part of every driveway project, and we build the eight-week lead time into scheduling from the first site visit rather than surprising you with it later.
Every driveway quote covers the permit application, demolition of the old surface, base excavation and compaction, paver installation with polymeric sand and edge restraint, and full site cleanup. If you're widening a driveway into the front yard, Toronto zoning requires permeable paving material for that section – see our permeable paving page for what that means for your project.
See our pricing page and calculator for current ranges by paver tier.
Yes – repaving, widening, or relocating a driveway that touches the public boulevard requires a City of Toronto street work permit, even for a straight repave. We handle the application.
Most driveways run 5-10 working days depending on size and site access.
Not upfront – concrete is typically cheaper to pour initially. Interlock's advantage is that individual pavers can be reset instead of replacing a whole slab when the ground shifts.
