How we build
Built on a base that respects Toronto winters
Most driveway problems in this city don’t start with the pavers – they start underground. Ontario’s frost line runs deep enough that a shallow four-inch gravel base is the single most common reason a Toronto interlock driveway heaves, cracks, or settles within a few winters. We build every project on a properly compacted Granular A and B base engineered for repeated freeze-thaw cycling. It costs more to do it this way – and it’s the only reason a driveway installed today still looks straight a decade from now.

Local knowledge
A city built in decades, not one style
Toronto isn’t one market – it’s six former municipalities stitched together in 1998, each with its own housing stock and its own driveway-replacement timeline. North York, Etobicoke, and southern Scarborough carry a postwar bungalow belt whose original driveways are now well past due; downtown brings narrow lots and laneway access; the 905 belt brings young builder-grade bases that settled early. Part of Interlock Experts, building interlock since 2009, we plan every job around the street it’s actually on.

Proper frost-proof base
Ontario's frost line runs deep – a shallow base is the most common reason Toronto driveways heave. We build to a compacted Granular A/B base, not a shortcut.
One crew, start to finish
No subcontractors on any job – the same crew that measures your site installs it.
Written quote in 24 hours
Itemized pricing before any work starts, so there are no surprises.
Local knowledge, borough by borough
Postwar bungalow belts, downtown laneways, 905 clay – we plan each job around its street, not a template.
Drainage designed first
Grading and runoff are decided before a single paver is placed, so meltwater leaves the surface instead of freezing under it.
Repair-first honesty
If a lift-and-relay or section repair will hold, we quote that – not the biggest job we could sell.

Choosing the right paver and finish
Standard concrete pavers cover most Toronto projects well: broad colour range, consistent sizing, easy future repairs. Premium lines add larger formats, crisper edges, and richer through-body colour that doesn't fade to grey. Natural stone is the top tier – unmatched beside century brick, at a matching price. Two practical rules from a decade of installs: pick texture for the job (smoother formats for driveways and snow shovels, textured surfaces where slip resistance matters, around pools especially), and scale the pattern to the lot – large-format pavers flatter a wide 905 driveway and overwhelm a downtown walkway.
Colour is the decision people rush and regret. Judge samples against your own brick and roof in daylight, not in a showroom – we bring samples to the on-site measure for exactly that reason.
Maintenance that extends the life of interlock
A properly built surface needs surprisingly little: sweep and rinse through the season, top up polymeric sand when joints wear low, and seal on the right schedule – after the first full season for a new build, then every three to five years. Watch the early-warning spots: step edges, borders, and the seam at the garage slab move first when a base starts to go, and a small repair there is a fraction of what the same neglect costs three winters later.
- Sweep and rinse regularly; spot-clean spills before they stain
- Top up polymeric sand when joints drop below the chamfer
- Seal after the first season, then every 3-5 years
- Re-level any paver that moves more than a finger's width
- Book an assessment at the first sign of edge or step movement
Three problems we see across Toronto properties
Postwar driveways at the end of their life
The problem: original surfaces from the 1950s-60s bungalow belt are decades past their design life. Why it happens: base standards of that era plus seventy winters of freeze-thaw. The signs: rippling mid-span, a widening gap at the garage slab, edges creeping into the lawn. The fix: full rebuild on a modern compacted base – patching a base that old just moves the failure around.
Clay soil, trapped water, and frost heave
The problem: surfaces that lift into waves every spring. Why it happens: much of the GTA sits on clay that holds water; when it freezes it expands under the pavers. The signs: ponding after rain, washed-out joints, heaving that partly resettles each summer. The fix: deeper excavation, a thicker compacted granular base, and grading that moves meltwater to the street instead of storing it underground.
Tree roots under mature streets
The problem: a ridge rising along one line of a walkway or driveway. Why it happens: root systems on 50-70 year old streets follow moisture under hard surfaces. The signs: a localized ridge that tracks a line, a tilted step, one lifted paver row. The fix: root-aware excavation, rerouting the layout where the tree will win anyway, and relaying on a base that gives roots somewhere else to go.

We had our driveway redone after years of heaving and cracking, and the difference is night and day. The base was clearly done properly this time – no shortcuts. The crew was on time every day and left the site spotless.

Great experience from the free on-site visit to the final walkthrough. Our written quote matched the final invoice exactly, no surprise add-ons. The patio looks better than we imagined and the seat wall was a nice touch.

Our old walkway had sunk in a few spots and looked terrible. It was lifted, releveled, and resealed in a day and a half. The crew explained what caused the settling and made sure it wouldn't happen again.

We compared a few quotes and this was the only one that actually explained the base depth and why it mattered for our winters. The driveway install took eight days start to finish, exactly as quoted.

Professional crew, no subcontractors, and they cleaned up thoroughly every single day. Our permeable paving install handled the first heavy rain without any pooling. Would recommend to anyone in the GTA.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an interlock driveway cost in Toronto?
See our full pricing breakdown and calculator on the pricing page – costs depend on paver tier and site conditions.
Is interlocking cheaper than concrete?
Not upfront – poured concrete is typically cheaper to install initially. Interlock's advantage is long-term: individual pavers can be reset instead of replacing a whole slab, which matters in a climate with repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Do you serve my area?
We serve Toronto and the surrounding GTA – see our full service area list.
How long does installation take?
Most driveways run 5-10 working days, patios 3-7 days, walkways 2-4 days, and repairs 1-3 days. You'll get a specific timeline in your written quote.
Do I need a permit for interlock work in Toronto?
Usually not for work fully on your own property, but anything touching the city boulevard or front-yard parking runs into Toronto's Municipal Code Chapter 743, and each 905 municipality has its own rules. We confirm the requirements for your specific address as part of scoping.
When should interlock be repaired rather than replaced?
If movement is isolated – one edge, a step, a low spot – a lift-and-relay on a corrected base is usually the honest fix. Widespread rippling means the base has failed generally, and section repairs would just chase it. The free assessment tells you which side of that line you're on.
Do commercial projects have additional requirements?
Yes – slip resistance, accessibility standards, and property-standards compliance come into play, and work usually needs phasing so walkways and parking stay open. We build that into the scope and provide the documentation your PM or condo board needs.
Are you insured?
We're finalizing current insurance and licensing documentation for our Toronto operations – ask us directly and we'll confirm in writing before work starts.
